Black-capped Chickadee
|
Black-capped Chickadees are gregarious creatures.
Commonly seen at feeders, their preference is for sunflower seeds, thistle, and suet. In spring and
summer, their diet switches to insects while they are feeding their young. Being quite agile, the
chickadee is one of the few birds that can hang upside down on a twig. This allows them to consume
insects or eggs on the undersides of leaves that other birds miss. Chickadees travel in flocks in the
winter, along with woodpeckers, titmice, and kinglets. In spring they pair off with their chosen mate
and may remain together for life.
