Blue Jay
|
The Blue Jay is one of the most common birds seen in the northeast. Their food source is mainly vegetarian; nuts, seeds, and berries are common staples. During the breeding season they turn to protein by eating insects, mice, and occasionally eggs and hatchlings from the nests of other birds. They are an ecologically important bird by consuming large numbers of tent caterpillars and gypsy moths that other birds won't touch. They also are responsible for reforesting areas with oak and beech trees.
