Common Redpoll

| We rarely see Common Redpolls on Cape Cod, but
2004 was an irruptive year for them. During periods of extreme cold in the North and low seed production in
spruce and birch trees, redpolls often head further south in search of food. They are truly a bird of
the north, breeding close to the Arctic tundra. Redpolls belong to the finch family and look very
similar to their cousin, the Hoary Redpoll.
