Eastern Phoebe
|
One of the first migrants to arrive in the
spring is the Eastern Phoebe, perhaps one of our best-known flycatchers. John James Audubon was the
first to discover that Phoebes return to the same nest site year after year, by tying silver threads
to their legs. They often build their nests on human-made structures such as barns and decks. The
harsh, but clearly sounding fee-be identifies that they are in the area. The Eastern Phoebe will
perch on a branch or wire twitching its tail and will swiftly snatch an insect in mid-flight.
