Eastern Tufted Titmouse

As spring nears, one often hears the loud, cheery call, "peter, peter, peter" of the Tufted Titmouse. These birds are common at backyard feeders where they consume sunflower seeds. The bird in this picture is a juvenile. You can see its bright yellow gape. Titmice are cavity nesters, but unlike their cousins, the Black-capped Chickadees who excavate their own cavities, titmice find natural cavities in trees or old woodpecker holes. This bird was primarily a southern species until the mid 1900's when it began its northward expansion.
