Eastern White-crowned Sparrow
|
White-crowned Sparrows are uncommon in the northeast,
but usually make a stopover on Wing Island during spring and fall migration. Males flash their brilliant
black and white-striped crown in alarm or when attracting a mate. They breed in northern Canada and
Alaska and winter in most of the United States. The bulky nest, built solely by the female, is placed on or
near the ground. Males gather food for the female while she incubates eggs, and both parents feed young.
