Northern Harrier

This first year female Northern Harrier was captured in our nets not far from the meadows where she hunts. Harriers prefer to hunt over meadows, typically freshwater and saltwater marshes. The disc like facial features, reminiscent of an owl, enhances their hearing ability. Favorite foods are meadow voles, but they will also feast on other rodents, rabbits, birds, reptiles, and amphibians. Harriers can live up to 16 years according to banding records.
