Swamp Sparrow

Foraging under cattails, the Swamp Sparrow hunts for insects. In the fall, seeds are preferred. It favors open marshland and nests among cattails, sedges, or shrubs. The nest is located near the ground, usually a foot above water. The young often fall victim to predators and heavy rains may wipe out most of the nests in an area. The male selects his territory, but the female picks out the nest site. The breeding territory extends from the Northwest Territory of Canada to most of the central and eastern portions of the United States.
