Virgina Rail

What a surprise it was finding a Virginia Rail in our net! Rails are very secretive creatures found in marshes. The long bill probes for insects in the soft mud and is probably very useful for grabbing snails off the tall grasses. This bird was quite docile while being held for banding. Small wings combined with short legs and long toes indicates this species spends most of its life on the ground.
