White-breasted Nuthatch

brown creeper

If you notice a bird making its way down a tree headfirst, it is almost certainly a White-breasted Nuthatch. The hind toes have an especially long claw making this possible. Their "ank-ank" call can even be heard in the dead of winter. Nuthatches feed mainly on seeds and nuts during the cold months and can be seen pecking at a seed it has lodged in a tree crevice.
