White-eyed Vireo

The White-eyed Vireo is easily agitated if you are lucky enough to walk by his territory. Watch for his white eyes surrounded by yellow spectacles. These vireos build the nest close to the ground and are highly parasitized by Brown-headed Cowbirds. Normally they lay four white eggs speckled with brown. The young do not obtain their white eyes until the following spring. White-eyed Vireos prefer to nest on the coastal plain from eastern Massachusetts to the Gulf Coast. They winter in the southeastern part of the United States and south to Central America.
